Position Summary:
In accordance with the Christian principles of the YMCA, the Assistant Swim Coach will coordinate and maintain the operation of the swim team program. The swim coach will direct organized and enjoyable training and practice sessions that lead the swimmers through skills mastery and which provide competitive challenges through swim-meet participation while maximizing the personal safety of each swimmer. These duties will be performed while practicing the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
Responsibilities:
Must be knowledgeable in all areas of coaching, coaching staff supervision, and rules pertaining to the on-going eligibility of the team and swimmers for the different leagues in which the team participates. (Ex. YMCA League; USA Swimming, etc.)
He/she must have current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications, Lifeguard certification is preferred.
Assist the Head Coach to develop and maintain a competitive youth swim program.
Direct and supervise swimmers.
Direct swim instruction that is tailored to the needs and abilities of individual swimmers.
Direct, instruct, model proper routines as they relate to work out and warm-up procedures; shallow water entries and racing starts; etc.
Provide direct supervision of swimmers at all times.
Effectively communicate and educate swimmers of risk factors in the sport.
Ensure fair practice and swim-meet experiences that relate to each athlete’s ability and experience.
Maintain safety around the pool deck at all times.
Remain alert and aware of potential hazards in and around practice and swim meet areas.
Present a professional appearance through your appropriate uniform, personal grooming, and attitude (positive and helpful).
Assist the Aquatics Director in implementing a comprehensive aquatics program that combines instruction/fitness/competitive segments of aquatics.
Agree to promote all YMCA aquatics programs.
Recruit swimmers for constant and continued team growth.
Perform any duties as assigned by the Head Swim Coach and/or Aquatics Director.
Specialized Responsibilities:
Communicate effectively with swimmers.
Provide current information on practices and scheduled swim meets.
Coordinate events to celebrate swim team participation and recognition for team and individual accomplishments.
Personal commitment to physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
Ability to motivate swim team members
Team Responsibilities:
Maintain the self-esteem of your swimmers.
Provide the Head Coach with constructive input regarding customer feedback, suggestions for improved procedures, or other ideas/comments.
Be punctual for scheduled practices and swim meets.
Attend appointments and meetings as requested by the Head Coach and provide adequate notification to the Head Coach if late or absent.
Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Work in a constant state of alertness.
Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, co-workers, members, non-members, etc.

Employees and volunteers who directly supervise children and teens will:
Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens
Attend required abuse risk management training annually
Adhere to procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising children and teens.
Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
Successful experience as a Swim Team Coach.
CPR/AED and Standard First Aid knowledge
Certified in Safety Training for Swim Coaches
